Physical Therapy And Injury
When we think of physical therapy our minds usually come up with images of work related injuries, or a sports injury. While therapy is needed for these types of problems there are other types of physical therapies that are at times needed too. For example people who have had hip or joint replacement, arthritis, osteoporosis, and even people who have balance problems can benefit from physical therapy.
People who suffer from ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke and spinal cord injuries usually receive Neurological Physical Therapy. Sometimes children have problems with fine or gross motor skills. Physical therapy helps these kids get better. Developmental delays can also be helped in children with therapy.
People with Cardiovascular and Pulmonary issues can be helped by increasing the patient’s endurance, and improving their ability to function. Of course, the obvious sports type injuries or someone who is hurt in the workplace can also benefit from physical therapy.
It is of course essential that the therapist be caring and good at their craft. As noted above, they must be able to treat a variety of different health issues. Yet, a therapy will only achieve so much unless the proper rehab supplies and equipment is used. Vital signs must be accurately measured, muscles and range of motion must be tracked and endurance and strength must be re-built in patients.
Injury, surgery, and disease weaken inactive muscles. The therapist must have an arsenal of exercise bands and weights available to strengthen these muscles. Endurance must be built up. Cycles, steppers, and treadmills must be used to accomplish this. If any of this equipment is of poor construction patient injury can occur. The equipment used in the center you receive therapy must be of the highest of quality, insist on it.
Of course, those that are less fortunate people that have special needs, and they must be treated with the utmost care and dignity. They too deserve the attention of only the best therapists. Quality equipment will improve their lives, which is exactly what physical therapy should do.
On the whole, we often think of sports injuries or work place injuries when our mind conjures up images of physical therapy. Yet, folks with arthritis, recipients of joint replacement. Stoke victims, and children with motor skill problems can all benefit from physical therapy. It is important to work with a top notch therapist and to exercise with only the best equipment.
