Physical Therapy And Aging Baby Boomers

The baby boomer generation is aging rapidly. Yet, baby boomers are not like previous generations. Americans are living longer and are remaining active well into their sunset years.  Most boomers simply do not want to slow down. However, sometimes injuries do in fact stop them. Yet, physical therapy can have many of these aging boomers back in action before they know it.

Many boomers are content to stay in the work place as long as possible. While boomers try and stay active, they are not teenagers anymore and their bodies respond differently than when they were younger.  Certainly, they still have some pep in their step, but the body does become more rigid as age sets in. Baby boomers are so active they want their therapies to be over fast. This is why it is vital that physical therapy centers be equipped with only elite physical therapy supplies.

Physical therapy centers know that the population is aging fast. This is certainly good for the physical therapy business. When the boomer visits his therapist for the first time his injury and general health is assessed.  The patient may be asked to perform some flexibility, strength, and endurance tests to create a starting point. Over the course of future sessions progress will be measured against this starting base line.

As treatment continues you will likely build strength with exercise bands and weights. All exercises and range of motion movements will be timed. These times will incrementally increase making the patient stronger and more flexible. You could be asked to hop on the tread mill, or cycle for several minutes. These will increase the boomer’s endurance. Vital signs will periodically be checked to ensure you are meeting your target heart rate, but not over doing it. This is a perfect example of why quality equipment is so important. Faulty vitals would not be good.

When physical therapy centers use top of the line equipment they have empowered their therapists to go up to a higher level of care giving. Faulty equipment causes injuries and problems. Your patient’s will notice the difference when they see your center filled with the most modern machines.

On the whole, baby boomers are fast aging meaning they are becoming more susceptible to injuries. The good news is modern physical therapy can work wonders on aging bodies. Equally important, is that physical therapy centers must use only the best and most modern equipment. Doing so means faster recovery times for patients.
