Adult Diapers for Urinary Incontinence
Urinary incontinence is a common problem affecting 25 million adults in the U.S. Symptoms vary with some individuals experiencing mild lack of bladder control and others experiencing complete loss of bladder control. No matter what degree of urinary incontinence you experience, there are a number of products that will help you manage the condition. Adult diapers are one option that provides protection and ensures that embarrassing accidents do not occur.
There are four types of urinary incontinence including overflow, stress, urge, and mixed.
- Overflow incontinence occurs when a person is unable to fully empty out their bladder. Many people with overflow incontinence are unable to determine when their bladder is full. This causes urine to leak out unexpectedly. Overflow incontinence may be caused by urethra blockage, weak bladder muscles, or nerve damage from conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, spina bifida, diabetes, or multiple sclerosis.
- Stress incontinence causes urine leakage when pressure is exerted on the abdomen through coughing, sneezing, laughing, or other physical activities that cause stress on the abdominal area. Stress incontinence may be caused by urethral injuries, prostrate surgery, some medications, childbirth, obesity, age, smoking, or other health conditions.
- Urge incontinence occurs when bladder muscles contract inappropriately. These contractions typically occur no matter how much urine is in the bladder and can be a result of bladder stones, bladder cancer, bladder inflammation, infection, neurological injuries or diseases, bladder obstruction, or other health conditions.
- Mixed incontinence is a combination of urge and stress incontinence. Urine leakage may occur during exertion (sneezing, coughing, etc.) or with urgency.
No matter what the cause or underlying condition behind urinary incontinency, adult diapers provide protection from wetting. Since people with urinary incontinency experience different amounts of leakage, there are many different types of absorbency products on the market. If you only experience a small number of urinary leaks, a thin pad may be sufficient. More absorbent absorbency garments that resemble traditional underwear can also be worn for more extreme cases of incontinence.
Many individuals have greater control of their bladder during the day than they do at night. In these cases, it is a good idea to purchase two types of adult diapers for day and evening protection. For maximum protection, carry along spare absorbency garments when away from home. By using appropriate undergarments, you will no longer need to worry about urinary accidents and will feel comfortable during any daily activity.
