Using a Texas Catheter
One of the most common types of catheters is the Texas Catheter. The Texas Catheter is so common because it is not inserted into the urethra of the patient. Instead, the catheter is placed on top of the patient’s penis and then attached to a cord that collects the urine from the patient’s bladder. Catheters are used in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and even in the patient’s home. Catheters, no matter the type, can be purchased from medical supply companies, internet companies, and even in pharmacies. Catheters do not cost too much, ranging in price from $1.50-$15 per catheter.
A patient who needs to use a Texas Catheter should consult with a doctor or nurse prior to hooking it up to their body so they know how to do so correctly. If the patient is in a hospital, a nursing home, or an assisted living facility they will not have to install the catheter on their own. Instead, the medical staff at that facility will install the catheter for the patient, doing it correctly, and not causing much pain at all. The medical staff will also talk with the patient about what the catheter will do, how long it will be on the patient’s body, and how much discomfort the patient will face while the catheter is attached to their body.
