Intermittent Catheter Use
When a person has trouble expelling urine from their bladder a physician will prescribe the use of a catheter. The catheter works as a kind of tiny pipeline from the bladder, through the urethra and into a collection bag. The use of a catheter can either be with long term placement or as an intermittent catheter. The intermittent catheter is inserted and removed only when needed to perform the draining of the bladder. Intermittent catheterization use is also referred to as self-catheterization, CISC, or CIC.
A patient is prescribed an intermittent catheter when they are unable to express urine from their bladder. The causes of this condition could be some form of neurological disorder, an injury to the spinal cord or with any type of post operative recovery for surgeries involving the reproductive organs. If urine is not properly drained from the body then there can be damage caused to the kidneys and bladder.
