Asthma is a breathing condition characterized by shortness of breath, tightening of the chest, coughing and wheezing. What causes these symptoms is inflammation of the airways. The inflammation in the airways causes enlargement of the air passages, which in turn limits the amount of air that can pass through the airways. This reduced amount of airflow can lead to wheezing sounds. Asthma attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath or coughing may last minutes, hours or in rare cases, days.
